Holy Spirit is God
In order for us to understand that the Holy Spirit is God, we need to understand God. God is a three part being. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. These three all-together make up the God-head. It is not possible for only two to be God. Each of these three are different but yet they are all one. It is something like an egg. It has three parts but put them all together they become one. Just like the egg each of the different parts have different functions. The shell protects, the egg white also protects and feeds, while the yellow is the yoke. Well, the three-party Godhead also has different functions. Each with different functions as God and different works. Each carries different realms of authority. One part cannot do what the other does, but only what they need to do. It is important that we understand that God was not created. He always was, is, and is to come, nothing will ever change that. This is why He is God. Sometimes it’s hard for man to comprehend this because its beyond our understanding. We just need to have faith and believe that God is God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit were all in the beginning, they were there when earth and man was created. It was not that the Father was there then later came the Son and the Holy Spirit. All were there. Divine attributes ascribed to God. There are certain divine attributes which only God has. The ability to be everywhere at the same time and to know everything. In the next few scriptures we can see that they talking about the Holy Spirit and how he has these abilities. It would not be possible for someone that is not God to have these abilities, for only the LORD God has them. As I mentioned that God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, are one. The Holy Spirit was also in the beginning of time. We see that He is eternal; He was not just created one day, but has been around forever. The work of redemption being the work of the whole Trinity Hebrews9:13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Not only has the Holy Spirit been around forever, but also He is everywhere all at once. We cannot run from Him, wherever we go He is there also. He can be ministering to someone one side of the world and to another at the other side. It is not possible for someone to do this, but only God. Psalms139: 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, "Surely the darkness shall fall on me," Even the night shall be light about me; 12 Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You. 13 For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. Just as God is all- knowing, the Holy Spirit knows all the things of God. He is the only one who knows these things. We cannot know these things for they are not for us to know. We can say that He knows everything, because He knows all the things of God. 1corinthians2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Here John is telling that he can't teach them any more, but the Holy Spirit will come and help them. John16:12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. One of my favorite divine attributes is that when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you receive power. Not some strange power like super-man , but a super natural, divine power from God. It is not possible for man, a strange being, or influence to give out the power of God. Only God Himself can do this. Luke1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God Acts1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." Holy Spirit is God Divine works are ascribed to the Holy Spirit As we know the Holy Spirit divine characteristics, He also has done divine works. Such as creation, He was there when the earth was created and He was there when we were created. If the Holy Spirit was not around we might not have been created. Genesis1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. Here the writer is speaking to God and says that God’s Spirit was sent and they were created. Psalm 104:29 You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. 30 You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the earth. Job 33:4 The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life The Holy Spirit is the one who gives life. God breathed His Spirit into us and we became alive. Without the Holy Spirit our spirits are dead. Everything is meaningless. God without the breath (Holy Spirit) cannot give life, because it is the spirit that gives life. Therefore the Holy Spirit is God. John 6:63 "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life Romans 8:10 ¶ And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Genesis2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Holy Spirit is connected in scripture with the Father and Son The Holy Spirit is grouped and coupled with the Father and the Son. They are connected in Scripture in a way that makes all of them God together. The Father and Son need the Holy Spirit to be a complete Godhead. Matthew28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Luke3:21 ¶ When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased." In John 14, Jesus Christ is praying to His Father that He would send the Helper to abide with us forever. John14:16 "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever-- 17 "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. John 16:5 "But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?' 6 "But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 ¶ "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 1 Corinthians12:4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all Acts 2:32 "This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 "Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. 2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. Spirit of God There are many Scriptures in the Bible that state the Spirit of God. It shows here that there is more to God than just Spirit, besides clearly stating that there is a Spirit of God. We need to desire to be filled with the Spirit of God, constantly. When we are we are filled with God Himself. Being filled is refreshing and encouraging. Romans8:8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Matthew 3:15 But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him. 16 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 1 Samuel 19:20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied Exodus 31:1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 "See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 "And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, Daniel 5: 13 Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke, and said to Daniel, "Are you that Daniel who is one of the captives from Judah, whom my father the king brought from Judah? 14 "I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. |
